Welsh Cup romance was in evidence on Saturday as Llanuwchllyn grabbed the headlines on a day of scalps against Cymru Premier opposition.

No fewer than five top flight clubs crashed out of the second round over the weekend - including Caernarfon Town, who went out to Ardal North West team Holyhead Hotspur on penalties on Friday night.

More was to come on Saturday as another third-tier club, Llanuwchllyn, enjoyed a famous shoot-out victory over Newtown following a goalless draw.

The Robins' downfall was in part self-inflicted, having being reduced to nine men with goalkeeper Alex Swindell and defender Callum Roberts being sent off.

Llanuwchllyn keeper Rob Dascalu denied George Hughes' spot kick, before Gwydion Ifan stepped up to book the hosts' place in the third round.

They'll be joined by Bangor 1876, who came from behind to beat Llay Welfare 2-1 in an all-Cymru North encounter.

Jonathan Collo put the visitors ahead at Nantporth after five minutes, before Sam Jones drew level for the hosts on 20 minutes with Tom Maloney scoring what turned out to be the winning penalty on 54 minutes.

Trearddur Bay progressed after beating Llannefydd 2-1 with goals from Toby Jones (66') and Richard Jones (84'). The hosts replied in stoppage time with an Elgan Roberts penalty.

Porthmadog's hopes of another lengthy cup run were dashed by Cymru North leaders Airbus UK, who left it late to win 2-0 at Y Traeth with goals from Tyler McManus and James Davies.

And Llangefni Town bowed out after a 4-2 defeat at Denbigh, despite taking the lead via Jack Smith after 12 minutes.

Harrison Bellis edged the hosts ahead with a brace by half time, with Nathan Brown extending Denbigh's lead on 62 minutes.

Ifan Mansoor gave Llangefni some hope of a comeback on 72 minutes, only for Paul Fleming to bag a fourth for the hosts in the 91st minute.

The draw for the third round will be made on the FAW's RedWall Plus channel on Wednesday night at 8pm.
