Holyhead Hotspur claimed the first top-flight scalp of this season's Welsh Cup by knocking out Caernarfon Town on penalties.

A goalless Friday night draw in battling conditions at The New Stadium - as heard live on MônFM - saw third-tier Hotspur more than match their Cymru Premier visitors, who paid the price for missing their chances.

The game inevitably petered out before the deciding shoot-out saw Paolo Mendes blast his spot kick over the bar, before Alex Jones stepped up for the hosts to blast the ball past keeper Stephen McMullan to record a famous 5-4 victory and trigger a pitch invasion among the bumper crowd

Hotspur have lost just once in the Ardal North West so far this season - and now, they book their place into the third round of the prestigious competition for the first time since 2019.

Manager Darren Garmey told S4C's Sgorio it was "one of the biggest scalps for this club".

But an early exit capped off a miserable week for Richard Davies' Cofis, who have fallen to three straight defeats in league and cup competition off the back of beating The New Saints in the Cymru Premier.

Caernarfon also crashed out of the cup in round two last season.

Elsewhere on Friday night, Bala Town eased past Llanrheadr-ym-Mochant 3-1, while Flint Town United beat Gresford Athletic 5-1 and The New Saints demolished Llangollen Town 16-0.

Cymru Premier leaders Penybont were dumped out of the cup in a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff Met, while Pontypridd United fell victim to a 2-0 loss at Penydarren.
