A lifeboat crew came to the aid of a stranded cat in the inner port of Holyhead,

A local RNLI volunteer was alerted by a friend who spotted the ginger and white feline on a low ledge at the old harbour wall at around 1pm on Tuesday lunchtime.

A crowd gathered as the town's inshore lifeboat was called out within minutes to come to the rescued of the frightened cat.

He was quickly spotted and the lifeboat carefully approached the cat with the crew removing their helmets so as not to cause any further distress.

The cat first moved away, unsure what was happening, before a crew member stood up and gently placed him safely onto the lifeboat.

The lifeboat moved a few short metres to another area where the cat could be safely put onto more secure ground, before they headed off up towards the town.

Mark Wade, coxswain at Holyhead RNLI, said: "It’s not every day we launch to rescue a cat, but we’re very glad this was a successful outcome."

"We launch to animals in trouble, not only to help the animal itself, but to prevent any members of the public getting into difficulty themselves trying to rescue it. In this case, the public did the right thing and stayed on land."

"One of our cat-savvy crewmen stepped up to make contact with the cat, who we now believe is called Peanut, and after his short trip on the lifeboat, he was returned onto dry land where he continued with his day."
