Anglesey’s school holiday activities gain national recognition

Anglesey Council

Efforts to provide free physical activity sessions and healthy meals for disadvantaged children on Anglesey have won national recognition.

Staff from Anglesey Council's leisure service, Môn Actif, together with colleagues in the childcare and play team were last week presented with the 2024 #HolidaysMatter Award for Outstanding Holiday Activities Project.

The award was presented by Mark Lawrie OBE, StreetGames chief executive, along with a trio of Team GB Athletes at the annual StreetGames 'Sport for Development Awards' at the Team GB headquarters in London.

The award recognised the council's efforts to ensure all children have access to healthy, active, and fulfilling experiences during school holidays.

StreetGames, a national partner of SportWales, works collaboratively to make sport and physical activity accessible to young people in low-income communities through trusted local organisations.

Môn Actif offers a wide range of opportunities for children and young people of all ages and abilities across Anglesey.

Over the past year, the service has delivered 28 'Fit and Fed' holiday camps, benefitting more than 890 children and young people with free activities, healthy food, snacks, and drinks.

In addition, a variety of activities, including family fun days, disability sports camps, community safe swim days, and opportunities to take part in mountain biking, climbing, surfing, and paddleboarding have been available across the latest school holidays.

The Anglesey Childcare and Play Team has worked alongside Môn Actif and various partners to improve provisions across the Island, making a positive impact on the local community.

Môn Actif sports development manager Barry Edwards, said: "The collaboration between Môn Actif, Anglesey's Childcare and Play Team, and our partners has enabled us to offer diverse activities for children during school holidays, promoting their health, wellbeing, and skill development."

"We look forward to continuing this work and providing more exciting opportunities in the future."

Anglesey's Leisure, Tourism, and Maritime Portfolio Holder, Cllr Neville Evans, added, "Our aim as a council is to create healthier, safer, and fairer communities through a range of preventative, curative, and supportive services."

"The brilliant work undertaken by Môn Actif and our childcare and play team created countless free opportunities for young people across the island."

"I'd like to congratulate everyone involved and thank them for their efforts to ensure that every child has the opportunity to enjoy healthy, active, and fulfilling school holiday experiences."
