Oriel Môn is celebrating a retrospective exhibition of work by the artist Huw 'Huwco' Jones, which spans over five decades and shows how his work has developed since his first painting at the age of 14 to the present day.
Huwco has shown widely across the UK and has paintings in the National Collection as well as several private collections.
Some of the early works have not been exhibited before and were only recently rediscovered when selectors came to choose work to buy for the National Collection of Wales.
Huwco explains: "I had totally forgotten about some of these paintings and when they came to select work it was as if we were all looking at them for the first time."
Huwco tends to work in series with each series transitioning from one to the other, from loosely painted work to the almost photo-real and then back again to the gestural work of the most recent paintings.
What unifies his work is his obvious joy in using paint and his quest to make sense of the situation in which he finds himself in.
This is an outstanding show and Oriel Môn is the perfect space to mount such a large retrospective exhibition. The 150-plus works are laid out in a fluid and dynamic way with information panels occasionally intersperses between the paintings telling Huwco's story from boyhood to present day.
Nicola Gibson, visitor experience manager at Oriel Môn said: "We are thrilled to host this retrospective exhibition of Huw's work. The show takes you on a journey clearly showing the various styles and themes which he has explored over 5 decades as a professional artist".
You can view Huwco's exhibition until Sunday 27th April. Oriel Môn is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-5pm and admission is free. For further information, phone 01248 724 444 or visit www.orielmon.org
